For the DIY home handyman or the professional roof installer it can be a process of trial
and error to find the source of a leak in a home can be a daunting experience. In this
example our customer had a brand new roof put on just six months earlier, yet failed to
return phone calls for the repair and we were eventually called on to find and fix the leak.
From inside the room I was able to determine the direction of water damage. The telltale
trail of water stains began at the ceiling and worked it's way down to the floor. I got out my
ladder and climbed the roof. It took a few minutes of inspection to conclude the water entry
point had as its source the badly mangled flashing and its improper installation --this is
entirely avoidable and totally unnecessary. Apparently when the new roof was installed
the old flashing was not, despite the assurance from the homeowner that the contractor
had indeed claimed to have installed a new flashing. I could see the diy home handyman
not realizing the importance of a new flashing but there is no excuse for the roofing
contractor. This was a bad job.

The removal of the old flashing was simply a matter of removing the few nails and

Once the old flashing was removed a visual inspection of the area revealed numerous
holes and entry points for moisture. Clearly this is where the ice and water was
entering the home. I was actually surprised that the roofers who installed this roof
actually left it in this condition. But then again, I see this all the time. To repair the holes
in the roof I applied a heavy layer of roof cement before installing the new flashing.

The new flashing was cut from an aluminum coil stock roll of 100' x 1-4" material (the
lumber yards typically have rolls of metal flashing in smaller quantities.) The flashing
was cut in two lengths of about 12'-0 each. The width of the roof was 20'-0". This gives
us a generous 4'-0" overlap. Each piece was bent lengthwise in the middle at the
approximate angle of the roof slope. The bend is made with a machine called a "break"
(shown here). Another bend was placed on one long edge only at a slight angle of a
width about one inch. The reason for the one inch bend is to allow for the exposed
edge of the flashing to retain its shape. The rigid line of the bend prevents wind driven
rain from lifting and exposing the flashing.
The flashing is inserted under the siding and tucked in tight against the exterior wall.
Roofing nails secure the edge of the flashing on the exposed end. The nail heads are
covered with a roofing caulk/sealer. The siding must be re-secured to the house. To do
this I used 1 1/2" while aluminum nails with small heads. The small heads are not
obvious yet secure the siding to the exterior walls. The nails should not be driven too
hard or it may dimple the siding.
